We Know How to Transition

Working With Hair That Is Between Textures

Hair is resilient, especially hair that is transitioning.

Here at Main Character Hair, we have come to understand several things about transitioning hair. One of the most important is that, regardless of the challenges that may appear when hair is moving from one texture to another, there is a way for both textures to exist together in harmony.

Within the studio we have seen this repeatedly through various case studies.

One client in particular is currently transitioning from over-processed color and heat damage concentrated at the ends of her hair. Because of this, the approach required intention and consistency.

A Structured Approach

The plan for this client included:

• controlled heat application
• adequate cleansing
• steam-penetrated deep conditioning
• targeted protein treatments every four to six weeks
• a daily preservation routine at home

Between visits, the client continues caring for the hair until it is time for us to meet again in one to two weeks during her Haircare Experience.

What Transitioning Hair Shows Us

Through this refined approach we have seen it repeatedly: transitioning hair is resilient.

When the strands are cared for thoughtfully, two textures can live together beautifully. What once appeared to be a challenge becomes an opportunity to guide the hair forward with patience and care.

Many individuals navigating transitioning hair with two textures discover that patience and thoughtful care allow the strands to cooperate far more gracefully than expected.

When Cutting Is Not the Immediate Choice

One of the most common suggestions for transitioning hair is to simply cut away the previously processed ends.

While this can certainly be appropriate for some individuals, it is not always necessary.

Some clients enjoy maintaining their length while gradually caring for the hair as it transitions. When the two textures can coexist seamlessly and beautifully, an immediate cut may not align with the client’s goals.

In this particular case, the client desires to remain a straight natural. She prefers to wear her hair in a straightened state rather than returning to a curly or kinky style.

Because of that intention, the approach becomes different.

Here at Main Character Hair, we begin from the end goal. Once a client’s desired outcome is understood, a plan can be developed that supports that direction in a way that is both suitable and attainable.

For this client, that meant preserving the length while strengthening the hair over time so that the transition could be managed with care rather than rushed through with unnecessary removal.
