That is where I dropped the ball today.

It has been a marvelous day in so many eternal ways. A twinkle-of-an-eye kind of day. The kind that plants your feet in solidity. To seal such quiet celebration, I decided to take an early morning walk.

The walk itself was not intense. The hoodie was. It quickly raised my internal temperature, and there I was — canoodling with nature beneath glorious skies — without a sweatband or hair hook to stretch my roots while enjoying the scenery.

Nonetheless, I trekked on.

When I arrived home and felt the faint dampness along my forehead and temples, I knew exactly what to do. What I know about hair — and what I instruct within Refined Haircare 101 — is simple:

How your bond sets is what you get.

I immediately tied my hair down, allowing the perspiration to dry in structure.

As the twinkling beads of salted water settled and disappeared from my temples, I untied the wrap to reveal a press still intact. Smooth. Obedient. As glorious as it had been the day before.

I attended our weekly rest meeting with quiet confidence, knowing the foundation had not shifted.

Nine hours into a full day, I decided to celebrate once more with a nap.

South Florida — thank you for heating back up after record low temperatures this winter. The nap reminded me it was time to turn the central air back on. I woke to warmth pooling at the nape of my neck. I could feel the roots beginning to swell.

It didn’t matter.

Again, I knew what to do.

I reached for my hair hook and executed a small, deliberate maneuver — informing my hair what the remainder of the day would look like.

Each strand obliged.

The base for the week remains strong, secure, and prepared for every
